Obituary for Garret Lang Lemoi

Garret Lang Lemoi
Garret L. Lemoi passed away unexpectedly on September 10, 2020 in Upper Manhattan, New York City.
Uncle “G” as his family fondly called him was a kind and gentle-hearted soul. He was intelligent, funny, generous, entertaining, and will always be warmly remembered for his great wit and dry sense of humor. He made everything more fun for family, and friends, and co-workers. He was loved by so many and will be deeply missed by all.
Born in Providence, RI, Garret spent his early years in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Mississippi, and California as part of a military family. He lived in Wichita Falls, TX, as a teenager where he graduated with high honors from Rider High School. Garret was named a Presidential Scholar at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, TX, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in biology and a master of arts degree in English Literature. He completed his junior year in college abroad at University College London. After receiving his MA, he lived in Spain for a year teaching English.
Garret worked as an editor for 20 plus years. He joined McGraw-Hill as an assistant to a former Northwestern Univ. English Professor, who was looking for someone with a love of words and who was a bit of a maverick! McGraw-Hill moved to downtown Chicago where Garret worked in the language learning program with authors developing new approaches, and where he helped to make McGraw-Hill into America’s largest trade publisher in the language category. Garret developed an interest in moving to New York, and when a vacancy opened in the head office, he moved east to New York City. He transitioned into the area of test preparation and study guides where he has been a valued member of the McGraw-Hill Test Prep team; creating and shaping products to help students succeed on high-stakes exams. Garret recently created and developed a brand-new line of books called the “Must Know” series – books aimed at middle and high-school students struggling with Algebra, Geometry, Biology, and more. This successful series has proven exceptionally valuable to students and parents across the country as they scramble to find homeschooling resources during the COVID pandemic. His colleagues at McGraw-Hill remember him as a terrific writer and editor, a trusted and extremely detailed source for quality TV/movie/graphic novel recommendations, and most importantly, as a loyal and beloved friend.
Garret’s friends describe him as a very funny and entertaining guy who had endless references to favorite movies and TV shows spanning decades. They remember him as a brilliant, quick-witted, and passionate person who was fiercely loyal and always knew how to make people laugh even when they were sad. He was admired for his generosity. Friends workspaces and homes are filled with his ever-thoughtful, painstakingly handmade gifts to friends and their kids. He was their go-to movie expert and a great movie-going buddy. A natural raconteur and consummate storyteller, he loved to tell stories, whether from his own life or recounting the plots of and characters in movies, TV shows, and books. He loved watching and discussing sci-fi series, superhero comics (especially Superman), quirky reality series, classic movies, animated fantasies, and macabre documentaries. Listening to him tell a story was always such a treat. He spent many days with his friends grabbing a coffee, taking walks, and chatting about pop culture. He loved get-togethers over "beverages" with his friends.
Garret loved to spend Christmas and birthdays with his parents, his sister, her husband, and his nephews, who he adored. He treasured visits with his aunt and uncle, and two generations of cousins in Connecticut. He was a loving son, a cherished brother, an admired special uncle, a wonderful nephew, and a great cousin. He was our family’s 21st century renaissance man with rare artistic creativity, which he showcased by unique and thoughtful Christmas and birthday gifts wrapped in his customized, hand-made, and legendary special wrapping paper. He gave so much thought and effort to the gifts he gave and the way he wrapped them – we never lacked for amazement.
Garret is survived by his parents, retired Colonel & Mrs. Wayne and Linda Lemoi of Temescal Valley, CA; his sister Meagan Cicciarelli, bother-in-law Tim Cicciarelli, and nephews Zach Cicciarelli, and Rett Cicciarelli of La Crescenta, CA; his aunt and uncle Mr. & Mrs. Joseph and Janice Bardon (Godparents), of Tolland, CT; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout the U.S. A private cremation was held under the direction of the Peter C. LaBella Funeral Chapel, Inc. in Brooklyn, NY.
