Obituary for Fred J. Gentile

Fred J. Gentile
Mr. Fred J. Gentile was a Senior Vice President of the Brooklyn Union Gas Company, where he was employed since 1960. Before coming to Brooklyn Union, he worked for a CPA firm and a manufacturing firm in Queens. His early duties at Brooklyn Union were in Auditing, Accounting, Finance and Tax areas. He was promoted to Comptroller in 1975 and Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer in 1981. He was named Senior Vice President in 1984.

Fred graduated in 1947 from Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. He received a BBA degree in Accounting from Pace University in 1951 and by attending night school, earned a MBA Degree in Financial Management in 1967.

He was a member of the American Gas Association and its Accounting Advisory Council and served on its Taxation Committee. He was also a member of the Society of Gas Lighting and the New York Chapter of the Financial Executive Institute.

Starting in 1979, Fred was a Board Member of the Navy Yard Boys and Girls Club and served on the Board of Managers of the Brooklyn Boys and Girls Club. He was a trustee of the Brooklyn Methodist Hospital since 1981 and was chairman of its Audit Committee. A long-time lover of opera, he was a supporter of the Regina Opera Company of Bensonhurst and was an officer of the Brooklyn Opera Society.

Fred was born in Brooklyn in 1929 and resided in the Gravesend section until 2005 when he and his wife moved to Eastchester, NY after his retirement. He was very active in his Brooklyn community. In 1956, when he was an officer of the United Civic Association, he and his association successfully lobbied for the building of a public library in Gravesend. He also was a director of the Family Consultation Center of Gravesend.

Fred was an active parishioner of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. He was President of his Parish Council, and was the secretary of his parish’s St Vincent de Paul Society. He also ushered at Sunday mass. Fred and his brother, Tony, contributed many Sunday mornings, as members of the Knights of Columbus Wheelchair Committee, to bringing veterans to chapel at the Fort Hamilton Veteran’s Hospital. His concern for young people resulted in Brooklyn Union’s providing a vacant field near its Coney Island plant for the Gil Hodges Little League. He was also involved with the beginnings of the Gravesend Little League.

Fred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane Gentile, a former Lafayette High School teacher of languages, his two sons, Dr. Michael Gentile and Stephen Gentile, and his four grandchildren, Gabriella, Francesca, Michael and Joseph Gentile.
