Obituary for Battalion Chief Edward Henry

Battalion Chief Edward Henry
On Tuesday, May 5th 2020, Edward Henry, a retired FDNY Battalion Chief (40th Battalion) and 9/11 survivor from Brooklyn passed away at the age of 79 due to COVID-19 complications resulting from an underlying illness. He was welcomed into eternal life and is now reunited with his son, Firefighter Joseph Patrick Henry who perished on September 11, 2001 and was never recovered. Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle to a large Irish Catholic family. On November 10, 1962, Ed married the love of his life, Alice, and together, they raised 6 children.

Ed is survived by his wife of 57 years Alice (Brady) Henry, children, Edward Henry (Tricia), Michael Henry, Mary Henry, Daniel Henry (Antonietta), Kathleen Henry and brother James Henry (Debra). He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Evanson. He was the devoted Grandfather (Papa) to ten grandchildren, Michael, Sarah, Joey, Megan, Paddy, Madelyn, Emily, Brady, Alice and James.

Ed spent 40 years on the FDNY, 24 of those years as a Battalion Chief. Chief Henry, as known to many, beamed with pride when talking about the FDNY and considered them a second family. Ed comes from a firefighting family. His late father retired as a Chief from the 43 Battalion and his brother is a retired Captain from 149 Truck. Three of his children, Eddie, Michael and Joey followed in their father’s footsteps and were fellow firefighters while his son Danny, is a Port Authority Police Officer. His two daughters, Mary and Kathleen are teachers in Brooklyn.

Ed was very proud of his Catholic faith and Irish heritage and found peace when listening to Irish music. Ed will be remembered for his kind heart, his sense of humor and the love he had for his family and his faith.

Funeral services will be private and a memorial mass to celebrate Ed’s life will be scheduled in the future. The Henry family is honoring Ed’s wish to be buried with a vial of blood, from his son, Joseph Patrick Henry, which has been saved since his time in the FDNY Academy.
